Pfarrkirche hl. Jakobus d. Ä., Gallizien

The parish church in Gallizien stands in the centre of the village of the same name in Carinthia. It is dedicated to Saint James the Great and dates back to a first mention between 1086 and 1121. The building suffered heavy damage during the Turkish wars before later repairs and alterations. The church combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. A Romanesque tower with a pyramid roof rises on the south side of the nave, while the Gothic choir has a five-sided closure and a 14th-century ribbed vault. Inside, the high altar from the late 18th century features a statue of Saint James flanked by angels in the style of Ignaz Günther. The left side altar, brought from Zweinitz, holds a Beautiful Madonna from 1425–30 and figures of Saints Catherine and Joseph. A later side altar houses a figure of Saint Florian. Outside, the churchyard contains a semicircular chapel niche with an expressive crucifix and wall paintings of Saints George and Michael. To the northwest stands the old mortuary chapel. The interior also displays a fine 17th-century crucifix on the north wall and Evangelist figures from an 18th-century pulpit on the gallery railing.
