Gelebtes Museum Mähring

The Gelebte Museum in Mähring stands in the old town hall of this Upper Palatinate village, just a few kilometres from the German-Czech border. It opened in 2015 to show how life changed when the Iron Curtain fell across a once-shared cultural landscape. Before the Second World War the region had been one community with daily exchanges to the east, but expulsion and division ended that closeness overnight. The museum tells this story through objects from the vanished village of Lohhäuser. After its inhabitants were forced to leave, the settlement was demolished, yet everyday items rescued from the ruins are now on display. A turning point came on 30 April 1990, when more than thirty thousand people gathered on both sides for the first trial opening of the border. Full removal of controls followed on 1 July 1990, and EU enlargement in 2004 removed the last barriers between neighbours. Inside, the permanent exhibition traces how political decisions reshaped daily life along the frontier. The building itself, once the local seat of government, now houses photographs, tools and personal belongings that recall a vanished world. Outside, the quiet streets of Mähring lead to farmland where the old border posts once stood. The museum belongs to the twelve-house network of Tirschenreuth district museums and won the 2018 Upper Palatinate heritage prize.
