Clapham North tube station

Clapham North is a London Underground station in the Clapham area of the London Borough of Lambeth. It stands on the Morden branch of the Northern line, between Stockwell and Clapham Common stations. The station lies at the northern end of Clapham High Street, a short walk from Clapham High Street railway station. Although the two stations do not connect directly, Transport for London counts journeys between them as a single fare. Clapham North and Clapham Common are the only deep-level stations on the network with narrow island platforms. The station opened in 1900 as Clapham Road, part of the City and South London Railway extension to Clapham Common. Designed by T. P. Figgis, it originally had an island platform serving both directions. In 1924 the ticket hall was rebuilt and the entrance refaced in biscuit-cream faience and black tiles by Charles Holden. The name changed to Clapham North in 1926 after the line reached Morden. Beneath the station lies one of eight deep-level air-raid shelters built during the Second World War. Visitors enter through a corner block clad in post-modern tiles, while the lower wings retain their 1920s design. The narrow island platform, about 3.7 metres wide, remains unchanged despite safety concerns. London Buses serve the station day and night, linking it to surrounding areas. The rebuilt entrance and platform structure reflect the station’s early 20th-century origins.
