Khojaly Massacre Memorial in Berlin

The Khojaly Massacre Memorial stands in Berlin’s Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, near the Gottfried Benn Library. It is a public monument dedicated to the victims of the 1992 killings in Khojaly, where civilians and soldiers were killed by irregular forces and a CIS regiment. The idea came from four sculptors—Akif Asgarov, Salhab Mammadov, Ali Ibadullayev and Ebrahim Ehrari—who worked with local officials and Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The opening was delayed after protests from the Armenian diaspora, but the monument was finally unveiled on 30 May 2011. The memorial consists of three abstract bronze figures—a father, mother and child—symbolising hope for peace. A plaque on the pedestal calls it ‘a gift to Steglitz-Zehlendorf’. The ceremony was attended by the district mayor, Azerbaijani officials and expatriates from both countries. The monument is not directed against any nation but stands against war and for reconciliation. Its creation involved state support and cultural cooperation between Azerbaijan and Germany. Visitors find a quiet urban space with the three bronze figures set on a low pedestal. The figures are abstract, evoking both grief and resilience. The inscription on the plaque marks it as a contribution to the local community. The surroundings include the nearby library and residential streets, making it a place for reflection. The memorial invites passers-by to remember the tragedy while looking ahead to peace.
