Landestheater Coburg

The Landestheater Coburg is a three-part theatre in Coburg, Bavaria, set on Schlossplatz opposite Ehrenburg Palace. The Neoclassical building holds 550 seats and dates from 1840. In 2008 it employed 250 permanent staff and 100 part-timers across opera, operetta, drama and ballet. The theatre traces its origins to 16th-century amateur plays for the ducal family. Duke Albrecht later turned the Zeughaus armoury into a theatre hall. A permanent ensemble was founded in 1827 as the Herzoglich-Sächsisches Hoftheater. The house has been led by notable figures such as intendant Bodo Busse from 2010 to 2017 and current intendant Neil Barry Moss. General music directors have included Hiroshi Kodama from 1996 to 2001 and Daniel Carter from 2021 to 2026. After the monarchy ended in 1918, the theatre passed to the Landesstiftung Coburg and then to Bavarian state ownership in 1920. The town still runs the venue while the state bears most costs. Inside, the theatre offers a grand auditorium with tiered seating and ornate detailing. The stage hosts opera, operetta, drama and ballet productions throughout the year. Schlossplatz’s central position makes the building easy to reach. The square itself is framed by Ehrenburg Palace and the theatre’s Neoclassical façade. Visitors can also explore the surrounding streets of Coburg’s old town.
