St Sepulchre-without-Newgate, Holborn

St Sepulchre-without-Newgate stands on Snow Hill at the north end of Holborn Viaduct, beside the crossroads near the Old Bailey. It is the largest Anglican parish church in the City of London and has medieval foundations. The parish once lay outside the City wall west of Newgate, giving it the name ‘without’. Smithfield Market lies within its boundaries. The church is formally known as Holy Sepulchre London. The church houses the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Memorial Chapel and the Musicians’ Chapel. The Musicians’ Chapel keeps a book of remembrance and holds an autumn requiem. In the 17th century the sexton rang a handbell the night before executions at Newgate Prison. The church’s bells appear in the nursery rhyme ‘Oranges and Lemons’. The Royal Fusiliers chapel was dedicated in 1950 by the Dean of St Paul’s. Visitors find a large nave dominated by a Renatus Harris organ of 1670. The organ case is listed for its historic value. The Musicians’ Chapel contains memorial windows to composers and the ashes of Sir Henry Wood. The church still hosts concerts and memorial events for musicians. The Royal Fusiliers’ Garden of Remembrance lies in the south aisle.
