Pen-y-Castell

Pen-y-Castell is a small Iron Age hillfort standing on a wooded hillside above the village of Llanddoged in Conwy County Borough. Its stone ramparts enclose a roughly oval area of about half a hectare on a spur that drops steeply to the Afon Ddu. The site sits at an elevation of around 180 metres, giving views across the Conwy valley towards the mountains of Snowdonia. The fort is one of some 300 hillforts listed by Cadw, the Welsh historic environment service, under the unique reference CN041. Archaeologists estimate that around 570 such forts once existed across Wales, most built on hilltops to give defenders a military advantage. Many were reused or strengthened during the Roman period, including nearby Dinorben. The Iron Age in Britain between 200 BC and AD 43 is often called the golden age of hillforts. Visitors reach the site along a narrow lane and a short uphill footpath through mixed woodland. Inside the low, grassy ramparts are levelled terraces that once supported timber buildings. The surrounding trees frame distant views of the Conwy valley and the Carneddau range, while the quiet air carries the sound of birdsong from the surrounding woods.
