Filialkirche St Cyriacus, Haidkirchen

The Filialkirche Haidkirchen stands on a flat plateau east of the Gurk river in the village of Haidkirchen, part of Kappel am Krappfeld in Carinthia. First mentioned in 1155, the church is dedicated to Saint Cyriacus and belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Kappel am Krappfeld. Its architecture mixes styles: a Romanesque nave with a flat ceiling and tiled roof, a Gothic apse with a five-sided end, and a sacristy added in 1851. A wooden bell tower rises above the nave, and the bell itself dates from about 1450. On the south-west corner a Roman tombstone fragment for Secundinius Viator has been built into the wall. Inside, exposed wall paintings show Christ in the Garden of Olives and the Crucifixion, while a wooden west gallery was installed around 1700. Inside, the high altar from about 1680 holds a carved figure of Saint Cyriacus and a painting of the risen Christ. The left side altar of 1697 displays a Madonna statue and an image of the Coronation of the Virgin. The right side altar of 1717 features the Coronation of the Virgin in heaven, with Saints Sebastian and Rochus and Saint Rosalia on earth. A late-Gothic statue of Saint Cyriacus, carved around 1500, stands on the mensa of the high altar.
