Schloss Siegenburg

Pilbis-Schloss stands on a small rise in Siegenburg, a market town in Lower Bavaria. The present building replaced a medieval castle destroyed by fire in the 15th century. Records name Leonhard Pilbis, a local patrician and councillor, as its 16th-century builder. The castle is a two-storey steep-roofed structure with dormer windows and octagonal corner turrets capped by onion domes. A later owner, Oswald Egg, rebuilt parts after the Thirty Years’ War left the castle in ruins. The castle has passed through many hands over the centuries. Among them were Raimund Fasold von Schäsen, Nikolaus Bernhard von Egg, Erasmus Lampfridsheimer and the Free Baron of Wadenspann. In 1922 a fire damaged the building and parts were repaired. Remaining fragments of the original enclosing wall still stand around the site. A two-arched bridge and the inner gatehouse date from the 16th century. Visitors find a group of buildings arranged around a courtyard. The central wing is a two-storey steep-roofed structure with plastered window frames, likely built in the 16th or 17th century. Nearby is a single-storey stable block from the same period. The castle park slopes gently down to the Landshuter Straße, locally called ‘Die Spreng’.
