Stadtmuseum Erfurt

The Stadtmuseum Erfurt stands in the centre of Erfurt, in the old House of the Stockfish. This late-medieval building once stored dried fish for the city’s trade. The museum now tells the story of Erfurt from its earliest days to modern times. Its permanent displays include medieval relics from the old town hall and the university’s ceremonial maces. A large film with aerial views and computer reconstructions brings the city’s past to life. Recent exhibitions have examined the Reformation and its long shadow across centuries of Erfurt’s history. Visitors climb through rooms that hold silverware, church treasures and documents from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building itself, restored in 2012, still shows its original stone vaults and wooden beams. Nearby, the Bartholomäus Tower and the Benary warehouse offer further glimpses into Erfurt’s layered past.
