Hochgern

The Hochgern is a mountain in the Chiemgau Alps, standing south of the Chiemsee in Bavaria. It reaches a height of 1,748 metres and has a prominence of 967 metres, making it one of the most important peaks in the range. The mountain marks the boundary between three municipalities and a forest district. Several lower mountains surround its central summit. The Chiemgau Alps form a striking backdrop of rugged ridges and steep valleys.
The Hochgern is worth the journey for its commanding views over the Alps and the Chiemsee below. Its prominence ensures that the summit stands well above the surrounding landscape. The mountain’s position at the junction of several districts adds to its geographical interest. The contrast between the high summit and the lower peaks around it creates a dramatic scene. The rugged terrain of the Chiemgau Alps provides a challenging yet rewarding climb.
A visitor finds a broad, grassy summit with panoramic views in all directions. The Chiemsee glistens to the north, while the Alps stretch out to the south and west. The steep slopes and rocky outcrops add texture to the landscape. The lower peaks form a jagged horizon against the sky. The sense of space and isolation at the top makes the climb worthwhile.
