Brandenberg Alps

The Brandenberger Alpen form a compact limestone range in the Northern Limestone Alps, lying entirely within Austria’s Tirol between the Achensee lake, the Inn Valley and the Bavarian Prealps. Locally they are known as the Rofangebirge, a name that covers the western section from the Brandenberger Ache stream to Achensee. The range splits into a central mountain group and three outlying peaks: the Guffert north of Kramsach, the Unnütze east of Achenkirch, and the Ebener Joch south of Maurach. The central group contains the highest summit, Hochiss at 2,299 metres, and a line of summits along the Rofan main ridge including the Seekarlspitze and Rofanspitze. South of the ridge the Dalfaz Walls rise with jagged faces such as the Dalfázer Wand and the Dalfázer Roßkopf. Other notable points are the Sagzahn, the Schokoladetafel and the Vorderes Sonnwendjoch, all above 2,100 metres. Lower foothills like the Pendling and Köglhörndl sit near Kufstein and Brandenberg village. Visitors find a series of alpine huts linked by marked paths that lead to viewpoints over Achensee and the Inn Valley. The Zireiner See lies in a quiet cirque below the central peaks, its waters reflecting the surrounding limestone walls. From the summits on the main ridge walkers look east to the Kaisergebirge and south to the Kitzbühel Alps. The Brandenberger Ache valley offers gentler walks through forests and pastures, while the Guffert and Unnütze provide quieter ridge routes away from the main crowds.
