Rehburg windmill
The Rehburger Windmühle is a former windmill built in 1821 on a hill in the village of Rehburg, part of the Rehburg-Loccum municipality in Lower Saxony. Its stone base still stands today, surrounded by dense woodland on what is now called Mühlenberg. Once part of the Rehburg estate, it featured a steam engine and served as a prominent landmark visible for miles around. The mill’s arched gateway bears a keystone carved with a crown and the initials ‘G.R. 3’, marking it as a relic of King George III of Hanover. A lightning strike in July 1905 set the wooden upper structure and its surrounding gallery ablaze, leaving only the octagonal stone base intact. Local firefighters could not contain the flames, and the fire burned until nothing remained but the sturdy foundation. Visitors today find the preserved stone base of the mill standing on the wooded hilltop. A memorial stone placed by the local heritage society in 1980 marks the site of the historic structure. The surrounding forest offers quiet walking paths and shaded spots to view the ruins. From the hill, views stretch across the surrounding countryside, giving a sense of the mill’s former prominence.
