Hartsop Dodd

Hartsop Dodd is a fell in the English Lake District, standing south-east of Brothers Water. It forms part of the north ridge of Caudale Moor but was given its own fell status by Wainwright in his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. The fell has a broad grassy ridge that gently descends from Caudale Moor. This ridge narrows and turns north-west before rising to a small grassy dome, which is the summit. From Hartsop village, the fell appears as a steep-sided, symmetrical peak. The fell’s western flank overlooks Caudale, a high valley feeding Kirkstone Beck and Brothers Water. On the eastern side lies Pasture Bottom, the valley of Pasture Beck, which joins the outflow of Brothers Water near Hartsop. A short spur on the eastern side ends abruptly in Raven Crag. Old mineworkings remain on the ridge above Hartsop, remnants of Low Hartsop Mine, which operated between 1867 and 1870. The summit is marked by a stone wall and a timber post. Many eastern fells are visible from the top, with Dovedale standing out. The ascent can be made up the ridge from Hartsop or via grooved paths on the western side. The fell’s shape makes it appear independent from Caudale Moor when viewed from the village.
