Christ Church

Christ Church stands in Pitsmoor, a district north of Sheffield city centre in South Yorkshire. Built between 1849 and 1850, it is a large Anglican church designed by the local firm Flockton & Son. The building was created to serve a growing population and cater for an affluent congregation. In 1851, records show about 200 people attended each of three services. The church received a £507 grant from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, with the rest raised through private donations. The church has been altered over time. A major restoration took place in 1907, and in 1913 most fixtures were replaced, including the font, pulpit, and a mosaic floor in the chancel and baptistery. Several stained glass windows were added, including one depicting the Crucifixion and Ascension from 1903. A church hall was built to the south in the 1980s, designed by Ken Murta and Austin Peter Fawcett. Christ Church is recognised as a member of Inclusive Church. Inside, visitors find a spacious interior with a mosaic floor and stained glass windows. The chancel and baptistery retain their 1913 design, while the hall provides additional space for community use. The church’s east window features Saint Wilfred and Saint Helena, and the north windows include designs from 1915. The building remains an active place of worship and a Grade II listed structure in Sheffield.
