Summerhill School

Summerhill School stands in Leiston, Suffolk, on land it has occupied since 1927. It began in 1921 when Alexander Sutherland Neill set out to build a school that would fit the child instead of forcing the child to fit the school. The buildings sit on a quiet campus of playing fields and wooded areas, with classrooms arranged around a central lawn. Inside, walls display pupils’ artwork alongside quotations from Neill’s writings. The library holds books chosen by students and staff alike. A large hall serves as the meeting place for the school’s daily community gatherings. The school is worth the journey because it shows how a democratic community can educate children. Every member, pupil or teacher, may speak and vote in the school meetings that run the place. Lessons are optional, and pupils decide what to study. Neill’s principle of ‘Freedom, not Licence’ means no one may harm others, even if they choose not to attend classes. The school has survived government inspections and legal challenges, proving its methods can work at scale. Its influence appears in similar schools across America, though Neill himself rejected some that claimed his name without his approval. Visitors find a working school where the ideas of A. S. Neill remain alive. The classrooms contain no bells or timetables, and pupils move freely between lessons and play. The school’s history is visible in portraits of former teachers such as the artist Paxton Chadwick and the mathematician Richard Goodman. The playing fields host games chosen by the children, and the woods beyond offer quiet spaces for reading or thinking. Even the inspection process now includes pupil voices, a direct result of the 2000 tribunal that settled the dispute with the government.
