Pfarrkirche Dobersberg

The Roman Catholic parish church of Dobersberg stands on a hill above the Thaya valley in the southern part of the market town. Built in the late 17th century, the church dominates the skyline from its elevated position south of the main square. It is dedicated to Saint Lambert of Liège and belongs to the deanery of Waidhofen an der Thaya within the diocese of St Pölten. The building has been under Denkmalschutz since the 1970s. The church’s history begins with a parish recorded in 1188. After fires in 1615, 1697 and 1876, the structure was rebuilt and enlarged several times. The present tower incorporates stone from a charnel house demolished in 1690. The interior reflects these changes, with Gothic elements in the choir and early 17th-century features in the nave. The high altar, painted by Eduard Swoboda in the mid-19th century, shows the patron saint and is framed by Baroque figures of Saints Peter and Paul. Visitors enter through the four-storey west tower, its upper section added in 1876. Inside, the nave has a wooden barrel vault on double-girders, while the Gothic choir retains a ribbed cross vault from the 15th century. The sacristy and oratory are attached to the north side of the choir. The stained glass windows, made in the early 20th century, depict the Trinity, the Holy Family and local saints. The churchyard surrounds the building, adding to its quiet presence above the valley.
