Schlößlein Manor House

The Herrensitz Schlößlein was a medieval tower castle in the Burgstall district of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It once stood on the northern edge of the Schandtaubertal valley. The site belonged to several noble families from the 14th century onwards, including the Herren von Seldeneck, Bebenburg, Zuckmantel and Virnkorn. In 1462 Adam von Rhein partly burned the tower. The von Thüna family occupied it from 1564 until selling it in 1650 to Swedish Major Wilhelm Kaspar Erhard. Only the later manor house survives today, built in 1858 after the original castle was demolished around 1870. The old oil painting shows a tall stone ground floor with a balcony on the south side and an oriel on the east. Above it rose a timber-framed upper storey that jutted out over the walls. Visitors find a quiet farmyard with the 19th-century manor house standing beside the Schandtaubertal valley. The valley’s gentle slopes and meadows stretch away from the site. Nearby, the village of Burgstall preserves its medieval name and character. The remains recall a long succession of owners who shaped the place over centuries.
