All Saints' Church, Northampton

All Saints’ Church stands in the heart of Northampton, its stone walls rising where an earlier medieval church once stood. The present building was raised after the Great Fire of 1675 destroyed much of the town, and it was consecrated in 1680. A Grade I listed structure, it follows the style of Sir Christopher Wren’s London churches, though designed by local architect Henry Bell. The medieval tower and crypt survived the fire, and the new church was built east of it in a near-square plan. Visitors enter through the tower into a barrel-vaulted nave crowned by a dome on four Ionic columns. The plaster ceiling is richly decorated, and elliptical windows light the vaults above the aisles. The church belongs to the Catholic tradition within the Church of England and has held alternative episcopal oversight since 1993. Its choirs sing five times a week, including Sunday Mass and Evensong, with groups for boys, girls, and young adults. Three pipe organs and three pianos provide music, including a large west organ with forty stops and a chancel organ installed in 2006. A statue of Charles II above the west portico recalls his gift of timber for rebuilding, and each Oak Apple Day the choir sings a Latin hymn from the roof. Inside, the nave opens into aisles and a chancel where icons of Saint Peter and Saint Katharine mark the parish’s former churches. The Mayoral Seat sits on the south side, and the north aisle houses a Consistory Court. A coffee shop occupies the narthex and space beneath the portico, named the John Clare Lounge after the poet who once sat there. The church’s flat barrel vaults and hemi-spherical dome create a calm, well-lit space, while the restored fittings and modern organ blend centuries of craft.
