Penlan-Noeth, Round Barrow 230m NNW of

Penlan-Noeth is a Bronze Age round barrow standing on farmland 230 m north-north-west of Llanarth church in Ceredigion. The grass-covered mound measures 22 m across and rises just 0.6 m above the surrounding field. It was raised by local people between 2400 and 1500 BC as a ceremonial site or burial place for the dead. Cadw has listed the barrow as SAM CD221, one of nearly 400 similar monuments on its register. More round barrows survive in Wales than any other type of ancient site. They first appeared around 3000 BC and the custom continued until the end of the Bronze Age about 600 BC. Visitors find a low, circular earthwork set among hedges and pasture. The barrow’s modest height makes it easy to walk around and see the wide views across the countryside. Its quiet location keeps the site free from modern disturbance. The mound blends into the landscape, offering a glimpse of how prehistoric communities marked the land.
