Church of St. Elisabeth

The Blue Church stands in the eastern part of Bratislava’s Old Town, a small Catholic church built in the Hungarian-Secessionist style. Its oval ground floor and 36.8-metre cylindrical tower rise beside a neighbouring high school. The church was designed by Ödön Lechner, who also planned the school and vicarage in the same style. A line of blue tiles encircles the building, giving it its familiar name. The roof is covered with blue-glazed bricks, and the façade was once painted in light pastel colours before turning blue.
Inside, the church is richly decorated with altarpieces. The altar shows St Elizabeth giving alms to the poor, reflecting her life of charity. The interior walls feature Romanesque double-pillars with an Oriental feeling. A model of the church can be seen in Mini-Europe in Brussels. The church was originally the chapel for the nearby gymnázium.
Visitors find a quiet, blue-washed sanctuary with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and hip roof. The tower’s height dominates the surrounding streets. The church’s blue tiles and wave-strip decoration create a striking contrast with the pastel surroundings. Its location near the Old Town makes it easy to reach while exploring Bratislava’s centre. The building remains a peaceful place for reflection beside the busy life of the city.
