Queen Street Mill Textile Museum

Queen Street Mill stands in Harle Syke, a suburb north-east of Burnley in Lancashire. Built in 1894 for the Queen Street Manufacturing Company, the mill is a Grade I listed building and the world’s only surviving operational steam-driven weaving shed. It sits on high ground above the River Calder near the M65 motorway, close to where seven other cotton mills once operated. The mill’s original four-storey frontage contrasts with its single-storey weaving shed, a layout typical of Lancashire mills. After a serious fire in 1918, the damaged frontage was rebuilt as a single-storey structure, while the looms were moved to the lower shed nearby. The mill is worth visiting because it represents a key chapter in Britain’s Industrial Revolution. Its original 900 Lancashire looms, bought from Burnley firms Pemberton & Co. and Harling & Todd Ltd., remain in place and still produce cloth today. The mill’s steam engine, first named Prudence and later renamed Peace after the First World War, is a working example of early industrial engineering. The museum also holds machines of national importance, including Hattersley looms and Sulzer and Saurer rapier looms capable of 180 picks per minute. Lancashire Museums restored the site with help from English Heritage and other funds, ensuring its machinery and history survive. Visitors find a working textile museum where original looms still weave cloth for specialist commissions. The museum displays a collection of shuttles, reeds, and heald-making machines alongside exhibits of historic textile tools. Demonstrations show how the machinery operates, offering a direct link to the mill’s past workforce. The café provides a place to rest, and the surrounding area retains traces of Harle Syke’s industrial heritage. The mill’s story—from its 1894 construction to its 1982 closure and 1997 reopening—is told through preserved equipment and archival records.
