Canford Magna Parish Church

Canford Magna Parish Church stands in the village of Canford Magna, a few kilometres north-west of Poole in Dorset. It mixes Saxon, Norman and mid-Gothic styles, with the chancel built as a small cruciform chapel in late Saxon times. The Normans enlarged the church in the 12th century and added an unusual north tower about 1180, set just north of the nave rather than as a transept. The tower holds six bells, five of which date from William Knight’s foundry and are now listed. The tenor bell weighs 1,088 pounds and sounds the note F sharp, while the treble was added in 1897 for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The church has strong links to Bradenstoke Priory until the Dissolution in 1539. In the 20th century it became known for advances in British Evangelicalism under John Collins, who arrived in 1971 and organised about thirty counsellors in a pastoral ministry inspired by the Oxford Group. The churchyard contains the graves of several notable figures, including the archaeologist and politician Sir Austen Henry Layard, who died in 1894. Ivor Guest, first Baron Wimborne, was buried there in 1914, followed by his wife Cornelia in 1927. The judge Sir Walter Shaw, who led the Shaw Commission, and Ellis Gawler, a Royal Air Force reservist killed in the Second World War, also lie in the churchyard. Inside, visitors find a building that preserves its early fabric alongside later additions. The chancel remains from the late Saxon chapel, while the Norman nave and aisles show the church’s medieval expansion. The unusual tower stands apart from the main structure, its six bells marking the passage of time. The churchyard offers quiet places to walk among gravestones that recall the lives of local people and national figures alike. The surrounding village of Canford Magna provides a peaceful setting for reflection on the church’s long history.
