Church of SS Peter & Paul, Weston in Gordano

The Church of SS Peter & Paul stands in the quiet village of Weston in Gordano, Somerset. A Grade I listed building, it mixes medieval styles: the tower and porch date from about 1300, while the nave, chancel and chapel were rebuilt in the 15th century. Sir Richard Percivale paid for the work and his tomb lies in the north aisle. The four-stage tower rises at the southern end, marking the skyline of the parish.
The church is worth visiting for its layers of history. Its Norman font survives from the earliest period, while the 13th-century stone pulpit and the Jacobean pulpit on the north side show later craftsmanship. The misericords, possibly moved from Portbury Priory, are among the oldest in England, dating back to the 14th century or earlier.
Inside, the four-bay nave leads to the chancel and south chapel. The tower’s four stages rise above the southern end, giving the interior a sense of height. The tomb of Sir Richard Percivale remains a focal point in the north aisle. The church belongs to a benefice that includes several nearby parishes, linking it to the wider landscape of North Somerset.
