Pfarrkirche Altenwörth

The parish church of Altenwörth stands on the main street in the village of Altenwörth, part of Kirchberg am Wagram in the Tulln district of Lower Austria. Dedicated to Saint Andrew, it belongs to the Hadersdorf-Wagram deanery within the Vienna archdiocese. Protected as a listed monument, the church occupies a quiet spot among houses and farm buildings. The church’s history begins in 865 when a church was first recorded here. In 1014 Emperor Henry II gave the parish to Abbot Sigmar of Kremsmünster, but repeated Danube floods forced its transfer to Kirchberg am Wagram in 1147. After centuries as a dependency of Göttweig Abbey and then the Grafenegg estate, it regained parish status in 1784. A porch was added in 1860, a chapel in 1933, and the tower restored in 1980. Inside, the church is a plain Joseph II-style hall with a raised choir under a flat ceiling. The high altar painting of Saint Andrew dates from 1867, while the 1894 figures of the Sacred Heart and the Virgin Mary flank it. Stuflesser also carved the 1910 Stations of the Cross. Outside, a sandstone statue of John of Nepomuk from 1715 marks the small square in front of the church.
