The Public

The Public was a multi-purpose arts centre in West Bromwich, opened in 2008 after years of delays and financial troubles. Designed by architect Will Alsop, the building featured bold colours, interactive art and flexible spaces for community use. It stood as a bold experiment in public art and creative education, drawing visitors from across the Midlands and beyond. The centre hosted exhibitions by major contemporary artists like Tracey Emin and David Shrigley alongside work by local creators. Over 380,000 people visited in 2012–13, a rise of more than 40% on the previous year. Events ranged from comedy shows by Al Murray to tea dances and knitting circles led by local residents. Sandwell Arts Trust managed the space, supporting 27 small creative businesses and training 120 digital media apprentices. Inside, visitors found a café bar, theatre, conference rooms and changing art displays on multiple levels. The building’s lighting scheme won a national award for its dynamic use of colour and movement. Though it closed in 2013, the structure later became part of Sandwell College, continuing its role in education and community life.
