Woodup Pool

Woodup Pool lies in Tollesbury, Essex, beside Woodrolfe Creek and Woodrolfe Park flats. The salt-water pond was opened in 1907 by Lady de Crespigny and bought by the parish council in 1925 for £250. In 1934 a visitor named Alexander Eaton drowned while on holiday with his fiancée. The pool has no lifeguards and is managed by the Woodup Pool Committee and the parish council. The pool is a free public swimming lake open to everyone. It is one of the few remaining salt-water amenity pools in the region. The water is tidal, flowing in and out with the creek. The site is recognised by outdoor swimming groups across the country. Visitors find a simple open-air pool set in a quiet corner of the village. Woodrolfe Park flats overlook the water on one side. On the other, the creek carries boats past the pool at high tide. The surroundings are calm, with no grand buildings or formal gardens, just the pool and its natural setting.
