St Peter's Church, Macclesfield

St Peter’s Church stands in Windmill Street, Macclesfield, in the county of Cheshire. It is an active Anglican parish church and belongs to the diocese of Chester. The building is listed at Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. Four Macclesfield churches share a team ministry, and St Peter’s once received a grant from the Church Building Commission. The church was designed by Charles and James Trubshaw and completed in 1849. The church follows the Early English style with a five-bay nave, north and south aisles, and a chancel. Its exterior shows rubble stone walls and tiled roofs, with a four-stage tower at the southwest corner. Buttresses divide the side bays, each containing lancet windows, while the clerestory has gabled dormers. The east window is a stepped triple lancet, and the tower has paired louvred bell openings at the top. A grant of £257 helped pay for its construction. Inside, a west gallery overlooks the nave, which is separated from the aisles by five-bay arcades on circular piers. The font bowl is decorated with blind trefoil arcading and carried on clustered shafts. An 1891 organ by Young and a ring of eight bells cast in 1947 by John Taylor & Co of Loughborough are also found here. The lectern is elaborately carved, and stiff-leaf carving adorns the pier capitals.
