Macclesfield United Reformed Church

Macclesfield United Reformed Church stands on Park Green in Macclesfield, Cheshire. The building was erected in 1877 to replace an earlier chapel from 1788. Designed by architect C. O. Ellison, it originally served as a Congregational church. The structure is recognised on the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II listed building. Gothic Revival style shapes the church’s exterior, using freestone and Welsh slate roofs. The church’s plan includes a main body, a south porch, and a four-stage southwest tower with corner buttresses. The tower features lancet windows, paired bell openings, and corner pinnacles topped with conical roofs. The entrance front displays a recessed porch with two pointed arches supported by polished granite columns. Above the porch is a stepped triple window, and the sides of the church are divided into three bays by shallow buttresses, each containing trefoiled-headed windows in two storeys. Inside, the church has a hammerbeam roof and galleries on three sides. A doorway on the left leads to attached church offices on the north side. The building’s Gothic details and symmetrical layout create a striking presence in the town centre.
