Grand Pavilion, Matlock Bath

The Grand Pavilion stands in Matlock Bath, a Derbyshire village beside the River Derwent. Built in 1910, it is an Edwardian building run by a local charity. Inside it holds the Peak District Lead Mining Museum. The structure was once owned by the district council, but plans to sell it threatened its future. A community group called Save the Pavilion Group formed to protect the building. The Pavilion has long hosted music events and nightlife. Until the early 2000s it operated as a nightclub. In 2019 a large rave with a 15 000-watt sound system filled the main hall. Performers included members of The Shining Path Collective and DJs Wrighty, MAKS, N2G and MC Natz. The Save the Pavilion Group fought to keep the building open and explored turning it back into a theatre and entertainment venue. Today the Grand Pavilion functions as a community space for theatre, music and events. The group secured a lease in 2012 and renamed itself The Grand Pavilion Ltd. It remains a charity while reviving the building’s original role. Visitors find a museum on one floor and a hall used for concerts and gatherings on another. The riverside setting and Edwardian architecture make it a landmark in Matlock Bath.
