Sundrum Castle

Sundrum Castle stands in South Ayrshire, 1.5 kilometres north of Coylton beside the Water of Coyle. Built in the 14th century for Sir Duncan Wallace, Sheriff of Ayr, it began as a rectangular tower on land granted by King David II in 1370. The Wallace family used the great hall for official business and private rooms above. By the late 14th century Sir Alan de Cathcart, Duncan’s nephew, took possession with royal consent. The Cathcarts held the castle for generations before selling it in the 18th century to the Hamilton family. The Hamiltons expanded the site in the 1790s, adding the Hamilton Wing and incorporating the old keep into a mansion. The castle’s history includes links to William Wallace through family legend, though historians dismiss the claim. Robert Burns mentioned Sundrum as an ‘ancient Pict-built mansion’ in 1785, but A. H. Millar found no evidence for Pictish origins. The Hamiltons, who owned the estate from the mid-18th century, profited from sugar and slavery, funding their purchase of Sundrum. Colonel Alexander West Hamilton later arranged for a child from a Jamaican plantation to be educated and trained as a stonemason on the estate. The clock tower was added in 1877 to mark a family marriage. Today Sundrum Castle is divided into privately owned homes after renovations in the 1990s. The original Wallace Tower remains, with walls up to 12 feet thick and a sealed prison pit. The estate includes Georgian and Victorian wings, mews buildings, and newer courtyard homes. A nearby holiday park sits within the 85-acre grounds. Wallace Tower is said to be haunted by a Green Lady, though her identity is unknown. The castle retains its category B listed status, preserving its layered past for visitors to see.
