Bischöfliches Dom- und Diözesanmuseum Trier

The Museum am Dom Trier stands beside the city’s ancient cathedral, its rooms filled with objects that trace the religious and artistic life of the diocese from Roman times to today. The building itself was once the bishop’s residence, and its walls now hold the story of Trier’s Christian past. The cathedral’s foundations lie metres below, where archaeologists have uncovered traces of earlier structures. The collection’s centrepiece is the Constantinian ceiling paintings, rescued in 1945–46 by Dr Theodor K. Kempf from beneath the cathedral floor. Thirty thousand fragments were pieced together over a decade to reveal scenes of Erotes and early Christian portraits, one thought to show Maxima Fausta. Liturgical robes and vessels, icons and folk-art pieces recall the Holy Coat pilgrimages since 1512. Four medieval bishops’ tombs include Nikolaus Gerhaert von Leyden’s 1462 masterpiece for Archbishop Jakob von Sierck. Visitors enter a single room devoted to the ceiling paintings, where the reassembled fragments glow against the walls. Elsewhere, glass cases display chasubles and chalices, while stone reliefs and inscribed slabs line the corridors. The atmosphere is quiet, the light subdued, letting the objects speak of centuries of faith and craftsmanship.
