Duffield Castle

Duffield Castle stands on the flat land beside the River Derwent in North Duffield, North Yorkshire. Records from 1320 first mention the stronghold. John Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford, held the castle until his execution in 1537. After his death the building fell into ruin and was finally demolished. All that survives today are low earth banks showing where the mound and ditches once lay. A modern farmhouse now occupies part of the old site. The castle’s brief life spanned the 14th and early 16th centuries. Its owner’s fate marked the end of the Hussey line and the property’s decline. Archaeologists recognise the earthworks as the remains of a once substantial fortress. The site offers a quiet place to walk among the grassy banks. Visitors can trace the vanished walls beneath their feet. The surroundings are peaceful farmland beside the slow-moving Derwent. A single farmhouse blends with the landscape where the castle once stood. Wildflowers grow on the old ramparts in summer. The riverbank path provides a gentle stroll past the earthworks. From the site there are wide views over the flat Vale of York.
