Schloss Radeck

Schloss Radeck stands in the village of Radeck, part of the Salzburg municipality of Bergheim. Once a strong medieval fortress, it now survives only in fragments. The site includes a small two-storey building with a hipped roof, remains of the old gatehouse and the late-Gothic chapel of St John the Baptist. The castle was first recorded in the 13th century when the Lords of Radeck acted as Salzburg’s ministerial administrators. After changing hands several times it was rebuilt in the 17th century by Friedrich von Rehlingen. In 1685 the estate passed to Franz Anton Graf von Königsegg, whose coat of arms still appears above a doorway. Later the property belonged to the Benedictine university church at Maria Plain before falling into private ownership in the 19th century. Visitors today see the restored chapel and the modest two-storey house that now occupies the site. An inscription marks the work carried out by Johann Paris Freiherr von Rehlingen and his wife Susanna. A stone escutcheon of Johann Georg von Königsegg adorns the west front of the modern dwelling. The entire complex is protected as a historic monument.
