St Thomas' Church, Stourbridge

St Thomas’ Church stands in the centre of Stourbridge, a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley. Built in 1726, it is a Grade I listed parish church of the Church of England. The chancel was added in 1890 by William Bidlake, an architect known for his work on churches. The church has been served by a long line of vicars, starting with Walter Hickman in 1736 and continuing to the present day. Among them was Thomas Ludovic Chavasse, who served from 1908 to 1909. The church also has a notable musical tradition with its pipe organ. The organ itself dates back to 1809 when George Pike England installed the first instrument. Over the years it has been rebuilt and renovated, now featuring three manuals and a pedal board. Samuel Simms served as organist for nearly sixty years, from 1809 until 1868, and was succeeded by his son. The organ’s specification from 2017 can still be found on the National Pipe Organ Register. The church’s history and its musical heritage make it a place worth visiting. Inside, visitors find a spacious interior with a well-preserved organ loft.
