Salzburger Hochthron
The Salzburger Hochthron rises 1,853 metres above sea level as the highest summit on the Austrian side of the Untersberg massif. It shares the mountain’s main peaks with the Berchtesgadener Hochthron across the Berchtesgaden Alps. The border between Austria and Germany cuts directly over the summit, running between Grödig in Salzburg and the Schellenberger Forst in Bavaria. Climbers reach the top by several marked routes that demand sure-footedness and fitness. The Geiereck station of the Untersberg cableway stands 500 metres north at 1,805 metres, offering a short approach. The Thomas-Eder-Steig leaves from the Schellenberger Eishöhle via the Toni-Lenz-Hütte and the Mittagscharte. Other paths start from Glanegg, passing the Dopplersteig or the Reitsteig to the Zeppezauerhaus. A longer route begins at the Stöhrhaus, crosses the Berchtesgadener Hochthron and the Mittagscharte, then follows the Untersberg plateau. At the summit visitors find open limestone slabs and sweeping views over the northern limestone Alps. The cross marks the tri-border point where Salzburg, Bavaria and the Berchtesgaden high country meet. On clear days the Hohe Tauern and the Bavarian plain stretch to the horizon. The cable-car station below provides a quick descent for those who prefer not to descend on foot.
