Garnedd Lwyd (carnedd gron)

Garnedd Lwyd is a round cairn near Senghenydd in Caerphilly County Borough. It stands on open moorland at grid reference ST107903, surrounded by heather and rough grass. The site dates from the late Neolithic to the early Bronze Age, around four thousand years ago. Round cairns like this were built as burial mounds, often linked to religious ceremonies for the dead. Cadw has listed it as a scheduled monument with the number GM462. The builders of Garnedd Lwyd also raised other ancient structures nearby. These include chambered tombs, burial mounds, standing stones and hillforts across the landscape. Their stone circles and hut circles show how widely Neolithic and Bronze Age people spread across the hills. The same communities left traces across Wales and beyond. Visitors reach the cairn by following rough tracks over the moor. The mound itself is grass-covered and unexcavated, standing low against the skyline. From the site there are wide views across the valleys of Caerphilly and beyond. The silence and openness make it easy to imagine the ceremonies once held here.
