Castle Salzdahlum

Schloss Salzdahlum stood in the countryside between Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel. The Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel built it in 1684 as a summer palace. Almost all of it was made of wood, though the outside looked like sandstone. By 1813 the building had fallen into disrepair and was taken down. Today only a few traces remain in the fields. The palace once held a great art collection. That collection still exists and is kept at the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum nearby. Frederick the Great married Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel at Salzdahlum in 1733. The marriage took place in the palace chapel. Visitors find no castle walls or towers today. The site is open farmland with a few low mounds. The museum in Braunschweig displays the artworks that once hung in the palace. A short walk from the fields brings people to the museum where the collection can be seen.
