A6 road

The A6 is a main north–south road running from Luton in Bedfordshire to Carlisle in Cumbria. In Cheshire it passes through Stockport and Manchester before heading north-west towards Preston and Lancaster. South of Derby it runs roughly parallel to the M1 motorway. The road is known as the London to Carlisle trunk road and carries heavy traffic between major cities. It bypasses towns like Kettering and Market Harborough, where sections were rerouted to improve flow. Near Leicester it crosses the Midland Main Line and the Grand Union Canal, linking key transport routes. Visitors along the A6 in Cheshire see Stockport’s historic viaduct and Manchester’s urban landscape. The road skirts the Peak District, offering views of rolling hills near Buxton. Between Preston and Lancaster it runs close to the M6, passing through countryside and smaller towns.
