Kleinerberg

Kleinerberg
Leonhard Lenz CC0

The Kleinerberg is a 1,287-metre peak in the Sengsengebirge range, rising above the village of Rosenau am Hengstpaß in Upper Austria. Its even slopes are covered in forest, and the summit carries a 1970s-era radio transmitter that required the hilltop to be cleared and a private road built. The northern flanks lie inside the Kalkalpen National Park, where strict rules protect the landscape.

Climbers and walkers value the Kleinerberg for wide views across the Windischgarstner Basin, the Tote Gebirge plateau and the sheer walls of the Haller Mauern. Several waymarked paths wind up the mountain, each offering different scenery and gradients. At the top, the open plateau serves as a launch point for paragliders and hang-gliders on calm days.

On clear mornings the summit platform gives a sweeping panorama from the Dachstein ice fields to the Traunstein massif. The contrast between the quiet forest trails and the busy airspace above adds to the mountain’s appeal. Returning down any of the marked routes brings the walker back to the quiet villages and farmland of the region.
