Eiskeller, Bad Gleichenberg

The Eiskeller in Bad Gleichenberg is a historic underground ice-storage facility protected by law. It stands in the centre of the spa town, near the Upper Brunnengasse. A villa built for the same patron overlooks the site from a few metres away. The entrance faces northeast, unlike most contemporary ice cellars which turned north to keep out summer sun. A small Egyptian Revival portal marks the entrance, dated 1837. Matthias Constantin Capello von Wickenburg, governor of Styria from 1835 to 1848, commissioned the structure. Ice was cut each winter from the frozen Sulzbach and Klausenbach streams and stored here for summer use. By the late 19th century refrigeration machines made such ice houses obsolete, yet this one survives intact. Inside, the cellar is carved into a trachyte hillside and lined with fired bricks. The cool, damp air preserves the original purpose of the space. Visitors walk down a short passage to reach the main chamber, where blocks of ice once filled the shelves. The villa’s presence above adds a sense of scale and history to the quiet site.
