Schloss Paternion

Schloss Paternion stands on a hill south of the village centre in the Drava valley. It was once the seat of the Paternion estate and now belongs to the Foscari-Widmann-Rezzonico family. The oldest part of the complex is the two-storey west wing, which survived a fire in 1859. A round-arched rustic portal marks the north corner of this wing. Inside, vaulted rooms include the castle chapel.
The main courtyard is framed by three wings, with the south side forming the grand entrance. A 17th-century Renaissance portal in red stone leads into the courtyard. Above it are the coats of arms of the Foscari-Widmann-Rezzonico family. On the façade, Roman gravestones and medieval Italian spolia are built into the walls. Nearby, a 16th-century portal bears the winged lion of St Mark.
The south wings contain the former living quarters, altered in the 19th century. A second entrance on the southeast side is topped by stone roundels. The east wing was largely rebuilt after the fire, while the west wing kept its original form. The whole estate remains in private hands, its history visible in every stone.
