Pfarrkirche Egelsee

The Pfarrkirche Egelsee stands in the centre of Egelsee village, part of Krems an der Donau in Lower Austria. The Roman Catholic church is dedicated to the martyrs John and Paul and belongs to the deanery of Krems in the diocese of St Pölten. It has been listed as a protected monument since the 20th century. The building began as a vicariate of Krems parish in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1784 it became a parish church in its own right. The late-Gothic nave has stepped buttresses and tracery windows renewed in 1906. The three-storey medieval tower carries a shouldered arch doorway and pointed sound openings from the same restoration. Inside, the nave is a single space divided into three bays under a low barrel vault with shallow pilasters and panelled ceiling fields. The central field holds a stucco wreath with a dove from the mid-18th century. The furnishings include a high altar of the mid-18th century with a painted altarpiece framed by rich scrollwork and a segmental pediment. The rokokostyle tabernacle is densely decorated with putti. The organ case is late-Baroque with early-Classical features, and one bell dates from the 16th century. The stained glass from 1906 depicts the parish’s patron saints.
