Schloss Granheim

Schloss Granheim stands at the northern edge of Granheim, a village that belongs to the town of Ehingen in the Alb-Donau district of Baden-Württemberg. The building replaced an earlier structure in the 15th century under Freiherr Johann Baptist Nepomuk Speth von Schülzburg. In 1776 the castle was rebuilt and remained in the hands of the Speth zu Schülzburg family until August 2004. Since then it has been owned solely by Marietta Freifrau von und zu Massenbach. The castle’s three-storey layout is topped by a mansard roof. The Speth family played a notable part in the region’s history for centuries. Their coat of arms still appears above the main entrance, marking the family’s long connection to the site. The castle’s architecture reflects both its medieval origins and the 18th-century renovation. After the change of ownership in 2004 the estate and its grounds came under new management while retaining their historic character. Visitors approach along a tree-lined drive that leads to the main courtyard. The three-storey building with its mansard roof dominates the scene, its stone walls and slate roof showing the marks of time. Inside, some original features survive alongside later alterations from the 18th century. The surrounding parkland offers quiet walks and views across the valley. From the courtyard the visitor can see how the castle once controlled the approach to Granheim.
