Weavers' Triangle

The Weavers’ Triangle is a cluster of 19th-century industrial buildings beside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal on the western edge of Burnley town centre. The mills, warehouses and foundries mark where cotton weaving once shaped the town’s economy and society. The canal’s arrival in the 1790s allowed coal and later steam power to reach the mills, while the railways of the 1840s brought raw cotton and finished cloth in and out. By the late 19th century Burnley had become the world’s leading cotton-weaving town, with nearly 100,000 power looms at its peak. After the Second World War the industry declined, but most of the Triangle’s mills survived as protected monuments. The area’s buildings show how the trade grew from wool to cotton and from hand frames to steam engines. At Manchester Road Wharf three canal warehouses stand side by side, each built in a different decade and style. Waterloo Shed and Woodfield Mill still show the saw-tooth roofs and iron columns used for weaving grey cloth ready for printing. Trafalgar Mill began as a spinning mill in 1840 and later added its own weaving sheds, while Clock Tower Mill kept its original water tank for sprinklers. Foundries such as Burnley Iron Works supplied the engines and looms that powered the trade. Visitors now find a landscape of stone and brick mills lining the canal towpath. The Weavers’ Triangle Visitor Centre occupies the old canal offices and wharfmaster’s house, run by volunteers and accredited by national bodies. Nearby Oak Mount Mill preserves its restored steam engine and chimney as scheduled monuments. The towpath offers a flat walk past the mills and warehouses, while the restored engine house stands as a reminder of the steam age that once drove the looms.
