Colchester Community Stadium stands in the northern district of Myland, a short distance from the A12. It is the home ground of Colchester United Football Club and the largest entertainment venue in Essex. The stadium opened in August 2008, replacing the old Layer Road ground which had served the club since 1937. Construction began in July 2007 on land known as Cuckoo Farm, chosen after decades of planning and debate. The project cost £14 million and was supported by grants and loans from local and national bodies. It has hosted football matches, concerts, conferences and community events since its opening.

The stadium’s history reflects Colchester’s long struggle to secure a modern venue. As early as 1976, a working party was set up to find a new site, but progress stalled for years. Safety concerns after the Bradford City fire in 1985 forced urgent improvements at Layer Road, yet financial limits kept the club from upgrading. Plans for a new stadium at Cuckoo Farm were finally approved in 2005 after a public petition gathered over 30,000 signatures. Scottish firm Barr Construction built the ground in just over a year, completing it in time for the 2008–09 season.

Visitors find a modern stadium with a capacity of over 10,000 for football and up to 20,000 for outdoor concerts. The pitch is surrounded by four covered stands, each offering clear views of the action. The Weston Homes Community Stand houses hospitality suites and media facilities, while the Family Stand provides space for younger supporters. Outside, landscaped areas include parking, a park-and-ride area and space for future commercial development. The stadium sits within a wider regeneration zone that includes homes, a primary school and a planned police station.
