Schloss Pöring

Schloss Pöring stands in the northern part of Pitzling, a district of Landsberg am Lech. It began as a medieval building in the 9th or 10th century and later became property of Wessobrunn Abbey. The structure shows Gothic elements but was restored in the 19th century in the Neo-Gothic style. The site is protected as a monument and includes underground remains from the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The castle passed through several noble families before coming into the hands of the von Nolcken family in 1920. The castle’s history includes the famous 15th-century statue of the Virgin Mary known as the ‘Muttergottes auf dem Schifflein.’ After 1731, the small chapel could no longer hold the growing number of pilgrims, so a new church was built between 1739 and 1742. Dominikus Zimmermann designed the church’s interior, though financial constraints led him to simplify the original plan. The castle itself was enlarged in the 19th century with a Neo-Gothic head building and a knights’ hall. The estate also features a Neo-Gothic wall with a pointed arch gateway and a small turret. Visitors find a cubic three-storey building topped with a hipped roof and a former chapel wing. The church, dedicated to Our Lady of Reconciliation, has a curved choir and unusual violin-shaped windows. Nearby are L-shaped farm buildings from the early 20th century arranged around a courtyard. The remains of the Neo-Gothic wall include a pointed gateway with steps and a small tent-roofed tower at the southwest corner. The whole complex reflects centuries of building styles and the changing needs of its owners.
