Dunnet Head

Dunnet Head is a wild peninsula on Scotland’s northern coast, jutting into the Atlantic where the Pentland Firth meets Dunnet Bay. It lies about seventeen kilometres west of John o’ Groats and marks the western edge of the firth, with Duncansby Head forming the eastern limit. A single-track road, the B855, runs north–south along the peninsula’s narrow isthmus, making it the most northerly public road on the British mainland. The land then spreads westward and northward into the sea, sheltering calmer waters in Dunnet Bay to the south. On clear days the view stretches across the firth to the Orkney islands—Hoy and the Mainland—about fifteen kilometres away. To the east lies the smaller island of Stroma, while Thurso, the nearest burgh, sits a few kilometres to the south-west. The headland carries traces of its military past. Near the lighthouse stand wartime installations built to guard Scapa Flow, including a radar station and a Cold War bunker once used by the Royal Observer Corps. Burifa Hill once housed the master station and a monitoring post for the GEE radio navigation chain during the Second World War. There was also an artillery range on the peninsula, now silent and reclaimed by grass and heather. The lighthouse itself, though automated today, remains a guiding mark for ships threading the treacherous waters of the firth. Visitors walk the cliff paths to watch seabirds nesting on the steep faces. A viewing platform overlooks the colonies where fulmars, guillemots, kittiwakes and puffins gather in season. Great and Arctic skuas patrol overhead, while gannets and herring gulls wheel above the waves. The lochs on the headland are restocked with brown trout every two years, though fishing is by permit between April and early October. The wind carries the scent of salt and heather, and the horizon stretches unbroken to the north and west.
