Miniatur Wunderland
The Miniatur Wunderland stands in Hamburg-Mitte within the historic Speicherstadt, the largest warehouse district in the world. It is the largest model railway system recognised by Guinness World Records, spread across 10,000 square metres. The exhibition features over 1,230 digitally controlled trains, 12,000 wagons, and nearly 5,300 houses and bridges. More than 11,800 vehicles move through the display, with 350 driving independently. The models include 52 aeroplanes, 290,000 figures, and almost 500,000 LED lights that create a day-night cycle every 15 minutes. The project began in 2000 after Frederik Braun conceived the idea while on holiday in Zurich. With support from his twin brother Gerrit and financial backing from Hamburger Sparkasse, construction started that December. The first three sections opened in August 2001, and since then, twelve distinct regions have been added. These include the Harz mountains, the fictional town of Knuffingen, the Alps, Hamburg, America, Scandinavia, Switzerland, a replica of Hamburg Airport, Italy, Rio de Janeiro, Patagonia, and Monaco/Provence. Future plans include sections for Central America, the Caribbean, and Great Britain. Visitors walk through a long corridor lined with rooms housing the model landscapes. Trains run along the walls and on raised platforms, while moving vehicles bring scenes to life in Knuffingen and other sections. The Swiss Alps stretch across two floors, with mountains reaching nearly six metres high. Knuffingen Airport includes a fully functional control system, and the Italy section features landmarks like the Colosseum and Vesuvius. Interactive buttons allow visitors to trigger events, from launching a helicopter to producing a chocolate bar. Behind-the-scenes tours reveal intricate details not visible from the main viewing areas.
