Alte Kongresshalle
The Alte Kongresshalle stands in Munich as a cultural and event centre built in 1952–53 by architects Etzold, Strobl and Freymuth. It formed part of the modern Convention Center at Messe München and was once the largest hall of its kind. After the trade fair left in 1998 the building served briefly as offices for the Munich Construction Agency. In 2004 the Edith-Haberland-Wagner Foundation took over and restored the hall under strict monument protection rules. The foundation renewed all technical services and removed later suspended ceilings to reveal the original covered patio. The replanting followed the 1950s landscape plan so the surroundings now match the building’s mid-century design. The Edith-Haberland-Wagner Foundation continues to manage the property for cultural events and public use. The renovation preserved the hall’s mid-twentieth-century character while bringing it up to modern standards. Visitors find a spacious hall with clean lines and renewed technical installations set within a restored garden. The exposed patio offers sheltered outdoor space in the centre of the building. Original planting from the 1950s frames paths and terraces around the structure. The hall hosts concerts, exhibitions and public gatherings throughout the year. Its calm setting near Munich’s trade-fair grounds makes it a quiet cultural retreat in the city.
